Almost a dozen teenagers were injured after a truck crashed into a bus stop near a high school in Fresno on Wednesday afternoon.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Almost a dozen teenagers were injured after a truck crashed into a bus stop near a high school in Fresno on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3:30 pm outside of Roosevelt High School near Tulare and Cedar avenues.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer says a 16-year-old driver was speeding in a truck when he crashed into a FAX bus stop where 20 students were waiting.

11 of the students were hit and taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Fortunately, the injures are described as -- none of them that appear to be very serious. Perhaps a broken leg, some back injury," said Dyer. "It could have been much more severe."

After the crash, investigators say the driver pulled over and ran from the truck with his 14-year-old sister.

Police say a family member picked up the driver and his sister and left the area.

Officers pulled over the family member nearby on Ventura and Orange and placed the 16-year-old under arrest.

"Officers were able to arrest him. He is in custody at this time," said Dyer. "He needs to be held accountable, and he will be."

The crash is now being investigated as a hit-and-run.

The Fresno Unified School District released a statement on the crash, writing:

"We are aware there has been an accident outside of Roosevelt High School where several of our students were hit by an out of control vehicle while waiting at a FAX bus stop. Emergency responders are on scene and our Fresno Unified emergency response team is also on scene providing support. Our team is also deploying mental health supports to the site. Please keep our Roosevelt students and team in your thoughts."

Cedar was closed at Tulare for several hours but has since reopened.
